Since 2003 Nike and the OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital have teamed up to create special footwear designed by who have battled serious illness to create shoes that reflect their unique personalities and experiences. Commemorating 10 years for the Freestyle Collection, the first sneaker that will be released in 2013 will be a brand new Air Jordan 5 inspired by a brave, young man who passed. In the beginning of the collection the sneakers chosen were only part of the Nike catalog, but the past 7 years have seen a numbered Air Jordon as part of the project. We look back at the previous 6 special edition J’s which consisted of the Air Jordan 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 9. With the AJ5 releasing we can only guess that the AJ7 will be chosen next year. After a strong rookie campaign  that saw him finish second in voting as the NBA Rookie of the Year in 2004, Carmelo Anthony had shown much promise as a scorer. Jordan Brand took notice of his basketball accolades and decided to release one of their classic silhouettes with a fresh new colorway to honor him. The Air Jordan 2 “Melo” released during his second pro season in 2005 with the Denver Nuggets, capping a successful first season and earning his “wings” on the court. Marking one of the first times a Jordan Brand sneaker with a player exclusive make up released to the public, the Air Jordan 2 “Melo” was not an immediate sell out as is the custom trend with most Air Jordans these days. Struggling to find a home in both brighter colors and one of the least popular silhouettes in the Air Jordan line led to tough sales for such an underrated piece of history. Continue reading

Air Jordans are known for their ability to straddle the line of being a performance basketball sneaker along with being a casual or upscale footwear choice. The original Nike Air Jordan II (2) started that tradition by being made up in genuine, high quality, authentic Italian leather.
